Do Low Fat Recipes Help You Lose Weight?
Most people who cook with low fat recipes are either trying to lose weight or are looking for a way to help their hearts. The fact is, though, that research is beginning to show that low fat diets not only don’t promote weight loss, but they don’t do much of anything to help prevent heart disease. Surprisingly, low fat diets may instead be causing people to gain weight and increasing their risk for type 2 diabetes.
Low fat diets have been popular for decades, however more and more people are becoming overweight. Many researches now believe that this is caused partly because most low fat diets are very high in carbohydrates. Additionally, low fat does not necessarily mean low calorie, so although people may be consuming less fat they may actually be eating more calories. The problem is that those extra calories can still be converted to fat and can definitely cause weight gain.
The key is that not all fats are bad for you. Mono-unsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids are considered “good fats” and have actually been shown to lower the risk of heart disease. Along with that, out bodies depend on fat to perform some pretty vital functions. For instance, your body needs fat in order to build and maintain the cell membranes.
Besides the fact that low fat diets deprive your body of the fat that it needs, often times they don’t provide many of the important vitamins and nutrients that your body requires to stay healthy. Part of the problem is that a lot of low fat diets eliminate animal products like meat and dairy and can leave your diet lacking in zinc, vitamin E and vitamin B12.
Since low fat diets are often high calorie and high carb research is beginning to show that people who follow low fat diets are becoming more obese and are actually increasing their risk for type 2 diabetes. Along with that, there is very little evidence that shows a correlation between eating low fat and lowering your risk for heart disease. Given those two things there are really very few benefits to following a low fat diet.
